“Gooaalll!” was the unified chant throughout Mexico after their team defeated the power house Brazilian soccer team. Sports bars, private homes, beachside resorts, all erupted into celebratory rants and raves as Mexico’s Oribe Peralta scored his second goal of the game on a magnificent header to ice Mexico’s first Olympic Soccer Gold Medal.

World renowned sports and entertainment artist and resident of Puerto Vallarta Mexico, Malcolm Farley, has unveiled a five painting series created from the historic Olympic Games in London this past summer. “Global Gold” represents Malcolm’s global lifestyle as well as capturing the five memorable moments of the games that most influenced him while observing competitions of all disciplines.

Sports wise, Malcolm possesses an illustrious track record as the “Artist to the Stars“. Has been commissioned globally to chronicle several Olympic Games, as well as Super Bowls, World Series, US Opens, and Stanley Cup Finals, to name just a few. Entertainment wise, Farley has captured legendary names live onstage with such luminaries as Stevie Wonder, Harrison Ford, Seal, Carlos Santana, and Ringo Starr, and events such as the Grammys, The Oscars, and Presidential Inaugurations.

The highly colorful, energy packed painting of Peralta scoring the winning goal in front of frenetic crowd at Wembley Stadium, relies on Malcolm’s knowledge of the game, which comes from playing soccer in Asia as a teenager. His signature blend of composition and juxtaposition of complimentary colors, combined with the gestured application of paint, make the canvas come alive as the players seem to actually be moving.

He has unveiled a series of limited edition canvases from the image, each piece is hand embellished, making each one a unique piece of art. Each canvas is signed and gold by Malcolm Farley as well.

This is a stunning commemorative is one of the highlights of the London Games, but with Mexico’s deep soccer history, it captures a monumental moment for its fans everywhere!

Malcolm Farley, renowned for his vibrant, energetic images of the world’s most talented athletes, has returned to portray one his “favorites”, Peyton Manning. Malcolm has been commissioned to paint many of Manning’s career achievements, including his winning Super Bowl performance against the Chicago Bears in the rain in Miami.

Now, Manning is clad in the orange and blue of the Denver Broncos and has the team heading for a deep run into the playoffs. Along the way Peyton has surpassed many of the game’s greatest names on the list of all time career statistics for quarterbacks. To honor Peyton’ s tremendous achievements this year, Malcolm has put together three spectacular paintings commemorating Manning’s return to glory in Denver. “Opening Day” depicts the inaugural game of the Manning Era in Denver. “Number 18” highlights Peyton in his new orange jersey, and the third image is a very special collaboration with former Bronco Superstar, John Elway, entitled “Legends of a Lifetime”.

Malcolm is no stranger to the National Football League stage. He and his infamous brush has been “front and center’ for the Super Bowls, Hall of Fame Inductions, and Charitable Events with the biggest names in history. He has chronicled the most prestigious events on the globe, spanning from the Olympics, the World series, and US Opens, to the Grammys, The Oscars, and Presidential Inaugurations. Being a Hall of Fame athlete as a collegian, his “inner knowledge’ of the game combined with his unparalleled talent, his sports art is a highly collected commodity in today’s marketplace.

The three paintings combine Malcolm’s signature use of color and gestured brush strokes, which accentuate the action and create a feeling of energy found only in his work. The “Number 18” and “Legends of a Lifetime” original canvas images measure 48×36 inches, and “Opening Day” is an oversized 54×37 inch masterpiece. The Master Originals are signed by Malcolm and the athletes in gold. A very limited number of hand painted “unique” canvases, hand signed by Malcolm and Peyton are available as well, measuring 40 inches in width.

As I awoke on a very quiet Christmas morn, seeing that all of Puerto Vallarta had obviously not been pacing themselves through the previous twelve days of Christmas, I realized that “recovery” period had been slated for today. The waves rolled in, creating the only action in the sleepy town on this Christmas Day, so I began my stroll on the Malecon to find some action.

The pigeons seemed to be the only ones celebrating the day. They all took flight as I approached, leaving behind crumbs dropped by revelers the night before. As they ascended to the “crown’ of the Our lady of Guadalupe Cathedral, I noticed a local street merchant preparing for a fruitful retail day.

Complete with his portable stand, all his merchandise attached to his “tree” of dowels, the humble little man marked his territory with a white tarp. The location seemed to have been established many times over. He went through his setup, as if it had been done many times before.

Brightly colored toys, balloons, and mini piñatas, blew in the gentle morning ocean breeze, drawing attention as they fluttered in the wind. He further tethered the loose ends down as to not loose them to the sea. He began to bark out his sales pitch as the city came to life. Children of all ages were drawn to the kaleidoscope of imagery and quickly made their way to the vendor.

Pesos were exchanged, and the faces of the children lit up like a Christmas tree. The children squealed as they began to play with their new toys, using the wind to aid in their fun. Alas, Santa had found his way through the sun and sand, like clock work, bringing joy to the faces of the children of the once tiny fishing village by the sea.

Feliz Navidad.

-Malcolm Farley

Due to the fact that the town of Puerto Vallarta lies on the coast, with the Sierra Madre Mountains cascading to the sea, there is a variety of transportation possibilities. Adding to the geographic combination, is the fact that nearby Nuevo Vallarta, a large development to the north of the city that hosts many of the larger resorts, lies across the state line of Jalisco into the neighboring state of Nayarit. Therefore, cabs must be certified for the journey into all areas to the north across state border.

Cabs from the airport are abundant and the fair is usually pre determined by an association which calculates the destination and regulates the fee accordingly. Cabs around town are plentiful as well, and there is hardly ever more that a minute wait anywhere. Again, fees are fairly regulated because competition is stiff, but make sure to confirm the fare prior to departing to your destination.

Buses travel every route, to every part of town, and connect to the outlying areas of town as well. Trips to Sayulita to the north, Boca de Tomatlan to the south, and Guadalajara three hours to the west, are all possible by bus . The ticket costs virtually nothing and provides and opportunity to observe and enjoy the local way of life on a daily basis….great people watching!

Car Rentals of every make and model are available at many reputable firms. Jeeps and Hummers for the jungle and beach, high end “rides” for the night out with that special person, and economical transportation for the budget conscious, allow for the “chariot of choice” for all occasions.

Ocean fairing vessels of every classification are available at recreational outlets and can be found, booked, and secured at many street and concierge locations. Make sure to check around, as there are deals to be found if you take the time to search them out.

Whatever your “gig” is there is the right mode of transportation to achieve your goal!

Happy travels!

As I sit peering down the city sprawled out before me below, lights twinkling in the dawn’s early light, I find time now to reflect in the quiet of the morning breeze. The town will be abuzz in the coming hours with one of it’s “highlight reel” days. Christmas Eve Day here in at vacations Puerto Vallarta, in a country deeply rooted in it’s Catholic traditions, will start slowly then crescendo into an all out party by midnight. The main event will possess all the glitz and glamour of Hollywood, (PV style) and will culminate in festivities at the plaza at the base of Our Lady of Guadalupe church in the center of town.

At the moment the cool morning breezes blow the Bougainvilleas gently, the crashing waves pound out their rhythmic pattern on the beach, and yet I read of snow drifts to the north. A Christmas in the tropical paradise of Banderas Bay, whether here on vacation or if you call this gem by the sea your home, is a truly unique experience.

From the cultural standpoint, the festivities begin in early December with the hanging of lights and traditional decorations through out the town. The birth of Our lady of Guadalupe on December twelfth marks the start of the “official” holiday season, and continues, non stop, through January sixth with the Epiphany or Los Reyes Magos, the day of the three Kings. The Posada season of neighborhood processions and work parties kicks off nine days before Christmas Day, which is enough time to get your fill of all the town has to offer culinary and beverage wise. Believe me, it’s true!

The climate this time of year is absolutely superior. Coming off the rainy season, which at times remind me of the monsoons I experienced in India as a boy, the vegetation comes to life. Birds of Paradise spread their splendor in every corner garden, orchids sway gracefully in the cool “winter” breezes, bougainvilleas cascade down from above through out the town, but the signature flower of the season is the poinsettia. Indigenous to Mexico, they plentifully adorn every establishment. One can find them in the wild or for purchase at virtually every shop in town, creating splashes of color at every turn.

Between the colorful foliage and costumed locals, the festive music that echoes up and down the cobblestone streets, the season becomes a virtual smorgasbord for the senses!

I want to share a photo from last evening that brings this all together for me. The Nativity scene on the beach, framed by the poinsettia clad Christmas tree in the town square, and the sun setting over the Sierra Madre Mountains, still stands for a moment when we all can find peace and share goodwill with our fellow man….no matter the location.

Feliz Navidad from Puerto Vallarta!

Famed film director John Huston not only referred to Las Caletas as his home, but wrote that it was the most beautiful spot on earth.

Las Celatas, which means “the creeks”, or a maritime translation of inlet or cove is more appropriate, is a strip of sand, rock, and jungle that has become a tropical haven for locals and tourists alike. Inaccessible by land, a variety of sea faring craft can carry you and your companions along some of the most spectacular coastline in western Mexico. The color of the ocean is pure aquamarine. The sun drenched jungle foliage radiates emerald. At night, the stars become diamonds within your reach.

One begins to understand Mr. Huston, it truly is a tropical paradise. As with most anywhere in the Bay of Banderas, the recreational possibilities are endless both on land and in the sea. Scuba, snorkeling, kayaking, hiking, or just “hang’n in the hammock”, are just a few of the ways to relax, rejuvenate, and enjoy this little bit of heaven.

A spa and restaurant are available for your continued pleasure, but the highlight of my day was an encounter with some exotic “fine feathered friends”….the parrots. A variety of these parrots and macaws, whose colorful plumage borders on psychedelic, remain in their natural habitat, making viewing them all that more special. The interactive experience with these magnificent birds in their own environment, gives one the feeling of having just communed with an old friend. They do possess a wisdom and a personality that becomes obvious at the first exchange of words and/or food.

Simply put, a day at Las Caletas, with or with out parrots, will provide those looking for their own personal Garden of Eden with a memory that can be revisited time and time again.

Amongst all the “beach” activities, shopping sprees, and the cultural offerings of the city, one has a tendency to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the well promoted, more traditional “hotspots”. Yet less than a mile or so away, the way the crow flies, from the coast lies one of the best kept secrets in Mexico.

The might Sierra Madre Mountain Range comes tumbling down to the sea near the south end of town, complete with an ecosystem that finds refuge high up in the canopy, hundreds of feet above the hillside. The terrain is extremely steep and literally drops to the crashing break of the waves below. Grasping to life on the rocky “cliffs” is found exotic vegetation that creates the source of life for an array of brilliantly colored butterflies and birds.

Finding ourselves near a tranquil waterfall some 3000 feet above the sea below, time seemed to stop as all that was heard was the beating of our hearts, and the symphony of bird calls serenading us with our own personal concert. Flashes of electric color flashed in the sunlight streaming through the densely forested landscape, as birds found their way to their next meal. Slow motion dances of iridescent color took place from leaf to leaf as butterflies displayed their “jeweled wings” to a world that is still void of the concept of man and his machines.

In between our quiet moments came the urge to physically “take part” in the natural beauty that had been so wonderfully presented to us. So, boys being boys, we shed all but our swim trunks and took the leap of faith into the cold mountain pools that quickly snapped us out of our Zen induced stupor. Invigorated and cleansed to our very souls, we returned the stair stepped ledges along the cliff time and time again to experience the rush of being airborne amongst such pristine beauty.

The water is the same water that rushes it’s way to the ocean, only at it’s source, it seems to be that of a different land. Thus is the beauty of the Bay of Banderas and all it has to offer….because magic happens when the mountains meet the sea! So when evaluating tropical vacations in Puerto Vallarta, you cannot go amiss!

Sand has been a common thread throughout movies, books, and photo shoots all portraying the idealistic way to live and relax, being one with sun, land and sea. The tactile sensation of running your hands or toes through sand when dry, molding it into anything your image conjures when wet, has long been the basis for hours of play on beaches through out the world.

Here in Puerto Vallarta it is no different. The Bay of Banderas defines thirty five miles of sandy “heaven” for vacationers and locals alike to frolic and create in one of nature’s complete playgrounds. With seven months of rain free days from November to May, the High Season provides the perfect climate for those more skilled at the art of “sand castles” to hone their craft and become true artisans.

During the peak, high traffic season of tourism, the beach area along the Malecon in the center of town be comes a canvas of large proportion. Pails, scoops, spatulas, spray bottles, melon ballers, and masonry tools of every size and shape are visible to those who stroll along the promenade. Images are usually of religious or spiritual nature, and of nature itself, and become the subject of some of the most gifted and talented sand sculptors in the world. The creative endeavor also becomes a performance art of sorts. These “masters of the sand” crawl, pat, and gouge their way to detailed, ornate, finished sculptures that are usually created in front of hundreds of onlookers daily.

Make sure to catch them off and on through out your stay as no matter how much “fixative” is applied, mother nature always wins out, and the creation returns back to “sand”. There in lies the inherent beauty of the craft. From those same grains of sand, another master piece will arise, speaking to an entirely different audience…etching a “visual” into the minds of those who take time to enjoy one of Puerto Vallarta’s most unique attractions.

Miami has South Beach, Maui has Front Street, Sidney has the Bondi, and Venice Beach has the Board Walk. Every seaside vacation spot, or travel destination through out this planet of ours, possesses that central hub of cultural activity framed by a backdrop of vast expanses of ocean splendor.

Puerto Vallarta is no different, and boasts a rejuvenated esplanade called the Malecon. The Malecon “is” the heart and pulse of the town, the historic center, and its main man-made tourist draw. The one mile long seawall promenade or boardwalk, now minus the traffic congestion, stretches the length of downtown Vallarta, some sixteen blocks, from end to end. Near the south end of the Malecon is the infamous Los Arcos outdoor amphitheater and the “signature” arches that provide the background element for staging various entertainment and outdoor attractions such as folkloric dancers, live music, and a variety of cultural events.

The Malecon is home to some of Puerto Vallarta’s renowned landmarks, including a string of bronze statues that appear on postcards and travel materials everywhere. The “Friendship Fountain“, the famed sculpture of three dolphins, a nine-foot high statue of a young boy riding “The Sea Horse“, and the sculpture “In Search of Reason” by Sergio Bustamante, depicting two pillow-head figures ascending their ladder to the sky, have all become synonymous with Puerto Vallarta. While it is true that the seaside, stone boardwalk does contain many historical locations and public art installations, it is the “Buskerfest” atmosphere that is played out on a nightly basis that “is” Puerto Vallarta! Street performances of every conceivable background and subject matter, performance painters using aerosol cans and blow torches to create “street art” for adoring crowds, and musicians from all disciplines, join together to make an evening on the Malecon a highlight of any stay in “Vallarta”.

I haven’t mentioned the food…..

Just as the art and entertainment is abundant, the food selection is a virtual smorgasbord. From taco stands, to street sided cafes, there is something for every taste and budget. delecacies

Serving up deliquesces from the surrounding hillside, fish on sticks from the sea, sweets for every sweet tooth, the “snacking” becomes an event for the night, enhanced by the “tasting” of various liquers along the way. The menu for fun is always extensive on the Malecon. Making sure you have the appetite is up to you!
